BI-72003 introduces students to the theological and hermeneutical dimensions of how New Testament authors interpreted and applied Old Testament texts, engaging with contemporary evangelical debates about interpretive approaches while tracing major biblical-theological storylines through both Testaments.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Three evangelical approaches to NT use of OT (single meaning, multiple contexts, fuller meaning)
  • Inaugurated eschatology and the "already and not yet" framework
  • Biblical-theological themes: new creation, temple, image of God, Israel's restoration
  • Church as eschatological Israel and transformation of Israel's marks
  • Hermeneutical principles for preaching and teaching intertextual passages

The course balances rigorous hermeneutical analysis with theological synthesis, equipping students to understand Scripture's organic unity and apply these insights to ministry contexts.

Required Texts:

  • Three Views on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament (Berding & Lunde, eds.)
  • A New Testament Biblical Theology (Beale), along with supplementary materials for independent study and reflection.
